Why choose a white kitchen sink?

If you are in the market for a white kitchen sink, I'm sure it is because of its look. White kitchen sinks are timeless. Their aesthetics are classic; there is no denying that. They suit many different style kitchens, from farmhouse to traditional to even modern in some cases. Plus, as we all know, white goes with everything! No matter the color of the cabinets or countertop, you know white will go well with it.

What are white kitchen sinks made of?

White kitchen sinks are made from a variety of materials. The most popular are: Fireclay, Enamel-coated cast iron, Solid Surface and Composites.  Recently, KRAUS came out with an enamel-coated stainless steel to offer a durable, less expensive option to cast iron, all while not requiring specialize installation.

What is the best material for a white kitchen sinks?

You know this is a loaded question, right?  My best may not be what is best for you. So, what I've done is created a comparison chart for the most popular materials and the properties they are known for.

Can white kitchen sinks scratch? Will white kitchen sinks stain?

The simple answer, is yes! Of course they can scratch and they can stain. Like most things in life, it is all about how you maintain and treat your investment. Damage is inevitable, with enough weight or force on any of these sink options. But, the type of damage will be different.  For example:

If a cast iron sink takes a shot, it is unlikely to crack, but can/will chip. A chip will expose the iron center. Once the iron is exposed, it can rust. This is something to consider if your family uses heavier cookware and is prone to throwing things into the sink.

Now, a fireclay sink can chip with enough force, but it does not run the risk of rusting. The chip will be less noticeable too, since the finish color is usually through and through. Serious pressure and or vibrations can cause cracking or crazing (fine cracks on the surface), so if you have your heart set on a garbage disposal, we would suggest an alternative option other than fireclay.

Enamel covered stainless is similar to that of cast iron, but steel isn't as 'hard' as iron, and has the capability of flexing more than iron does.

Chips/Cracks too can happen on composite sinks. But, you can repair the cracks or chips with tinted epoxy. The repair isn't extensive where you'd most likely be able to do it yourself.

How to keep a white kitchen sink clean?

It is important to note that every manufacturer will have a set of care & maintenance rules and guidelines for their product. It is important to follow these instructions, so your warranty is not voided. Generally speaking, you'd never want to use an abrasive solvents or scouring pads like steel wool. And you'd always want to rinse out the sink after use, this way nothing remains on the surface for a long period of time.
